夏目漱石の小説『こころ』には、主人公の「私（わたくし）」がたくさん出てくる。「私」が「私」のことを語っているのだから当たり前なのかもしれないが、一度「私」の文字の多さが気になり始めると、それからどんなに読み進めても「私」の文字ばかりに目がいってしまい小説の内容が全く頭に入らなくなる。そこでこの一冊にどれくらいの「私」があるかを体感したくなって、本の中からすべての「私」をくり抜くことにした。
　『こころ』からくり抜いた「私」はしばらく小瓶の中に入れて保存していたが、展示の際には「私」の裏に印刷された文字も一緒に見せるために鏡の上に散らしてみた。

　どのページもたいてい紙の裏と表にテキストが印刷がされているのから、「私」を切り抜こうとすると、それと同時に裏に印刷された文字も一緒にくり抜いてしまうのである。


In Natsume Soseki's novel "Kokoro," the protagonist, referred to as “私/Me,” appears frequently. It may be natural for “私/Me” to appear often since it is “私/Me" talking about “私/Me". However, once I became conscious of the abundance of the word "私," no matter how much I progressed in reading, my focus would shift to the word "私," and I couldn't retain the content of the novel at all. So, to physically grasp how many times "私" appears in this book, I decided to cut out every occurrence of "私" from the text.
The "私" I cut out from "Kokoro" was temporarily placed in a small bottle for safekeeping. It seemed rather poetic to keep countless "私" inside that bottle as is. However, I thought it would be more interesting if I could also see the text printed on the back of "私." So, I scattered them on top of a mirror.

Since most pages have text printed on both sides of the paper, when I try to cut out "私," I inadvertently cut out the text on the reverse side as well.
